Although I already work in a school library, my principal is very strict and really doesn't like social media. Because of this, I have created a hypothetical school library social media account. I will be updating this account using actual experiences within my library, but as if it is a different school. My hypothetical school is called Literary Academy and I will be using an Instagram account to help collaborate with students and teachers, keep lines of communication open, and advocate for my patrons.

I chose Instagram because I see more students using this form of social media than anything else. It has such a simple layout and it's so easy to use. I often find myself scrolling through my Instagram feed just to pass the time, so I can assume that patrons are doing the same. Having a library account that students follow allows for any information or upcoming events to be easily advertised just by patrons seeing them scroll by on their feed. The Instagram Now article by Molly Wetta provided a lot of ideas pertaining to utilizing Instagram effectively, but one that really stuck out to me was, "Posting these [events] a few hours before an event is a great way to jog teens’ memories about the time, date, and location." I have seen firsthand, on several occasions, students simply forgetting that we had an event because they didn't have it on a calendar and it wasn't on their minds. But if they see something about an event while scrolling they would be more likely to attend. I plan to follow several of the tips discussed in this article to make running an Instagram account fun and not like an extra job.

First of all, I love the logo you created for your Instagram page! It looks appealing and creative! I think using social media as a way to remind students and parents of special events is a great tool. I, too, use Facebook and Instagram to find events near me and like the reminder feature as well. I also like that Instagram suggests people to follow. I have found a few different librarians who have successful Instagram accounts. They have such great ideas that I would love to incorporate into my own library some day. That's the great thing about educators on social media, when we have great ideas, we share them with others in hopes that it brings joy in someone else's school!
ReplyDeleteHi Destinee,
ReplyDeleteVery cool...I like the concept of you posting on the hypothetical Instagram page about the current library happenings. It gives good practice for the highlighting events and other library happenings when you are able to use social media (Instagram) to showcase the library.
I couldn't agree with you more when you mentioned that students forget. I thought about how our school gave students two weeks to get Job Shadowing day form turned in, we announced it everyday on the morning news show and in our afternoon announcements, but even on they day before they were due, students asked if they could turn them in the next morning, because they forgot. Constant reminders, especially moments before an event is taking place really does help.
Thank you for your perspective,
